AI is changing the equation.

The important difference is not that modern automation can execute more steps.
It is that increasingly capable AI systems can interpret unstructured information, reason over context, choose among possible actions and adapt execution toward an objective.
That opens processes that traditional rule-based automation struggled to reach.
Consider customer operations.
A conventional workflow may categorise a ticket using predefined rules and route it to a queue.
An intelligent system can potentially understand the customer's issue, inspect account history, gather relevant information from multiple systems, propose a resolution, execute permitted actions and escalate only when human judgment is required.
The workflow is no longer merely moving information.
It is participating in the work.
But intelligence increases the need for control.
Deterministic automation is relatively easy to reason about: the same input should trigger the same defined path.
Agentic systems introduce more flexibility — and therefore more questions around permissions, reliability, monitoring, explainability and human oversight.
Don't automate the broken process.
